Ethics of Leadership in Times of Crisis: A Study of Imam Ali’s Defensive Policy in Confronting Internal Challenges

Abstract

This research examines the ethics of leadership during times of crisis through a study of the defensive policy of Ali ibn Abi Talib as an advanced model in Islamic political and military thought, particularly in light of the complex circumstances faced by the Islamic state during his caliphate. The era of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) witnessed severe political and social crises represented by internal divisions, armed conflicts, and intellectual and political disputes that threatened the unity and stability of Muslim society. Such conditions required a leadership capable of balancing the preservation of the state with adherence to moral and humanitarian principles.                                                                                              

The research seeks to reveal the ethical and intellectual foundations upon which Imam Ali (peace be upon him) relied in managing crises and defending the state. It also aims to clarify his vision in dealing with opponents and adversaries, in addition to explaining his approach to the use of force and its regulation within the framework of justice and legitimacy. Furthermore, the study highlights the leadership characteristics that distinguished Imam Ali, including wisdom, patience, justice, and respect for human rights even during times of war and conflict, while demonstrating the impact of these principles on strengthening political and social stability.                    

The study adopted the historical-analytical approach by tracing the historical events associated with the wars of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) and analyzing the texts contained in the Nahj al-Balagha. The research concluded that Imam Ali’s defensive policy was not based on violence or military expansion; rather, it was founded upon an integrated ethical and humanitarian vision aimed at protecting society, preserving the state, and maintaining the unity of the. The study also demonstrated that Imam Ali prioritized internal reform and dialogue over armed confrontation and resorted to force only in cases of extreme necessity and after exhausting peaceful means. Therefore, his leadership represents a pioneering model in the ethics of crisis management and the establishment of a just state  .
