Abstract

The military institution in ancient Rome formed the backbone upon which the state relied for expansion and control throughout various eras (monarchy, republic, and empire). As the Roman army transformed from a volunteer militia of citizens into a standing professional force, the need arose for sustainable mechanisms to ensure the loyalty of soldiers and non-commissioned officers. Thus, "military gifts" (donativa), decorations, and commemorative presents emerged as essential elements in the relationship between soldier and commander, transcending their material value to become symbols of social and political status and imperial recognition of competence.
