The Eloquence of Metaphor in Expressing the Politically and Socially Unspoken in Karim al-Hashimi's Novel "Certainty of the Labyrinths" as a Model

Abstract

This study is situated within the realm of contemporary critical rhetoric، examining the novel The Certainty of Labyrinths by the writer Karim Ajil Al-Hashimi. It employs metonymy (Al-Kinayah) as an analytical tool to decipher the codes of the unspoken within the crisis-ridden Iraqi reality. The research begins with a conceptual anchoring of metonymy within the rhetorical heritage، defining it as speaking of one thing while intending another، and as a dynamic interplay between the realms of reality and metaphor that imparts grandeur and splendor to the text. The central problem of the study lies in monitoring how the metonymic style transforms from a mere stylistic ornament into a means of resistance and ideological exposure. 

The textual analysis reveals the novelist’s ingenuity in deploying metonymy across two interconnected dimensions: social and political. The metonymic expressions serve as a mirror reflecting the pain of suffering and the hardships of a grueling life، such as the metonymies capturing the toll of wars، their longevity، and their severe cruelty on ordinary citizens. Furthermore، metonymy emerges as a defensive and psychological mechanism to express dissimulation (Taqiyyah) and false loyalty، driven by subjugation and coercion under oppressive، totalitarian regimes.

The research successfully demonstrates the depth of security and political tyranny by tracing the metonymies of concealment and evasion. These expressions accurately depict the infiltration of security apparatuses، the erosion of social bonds، and the transformation of society into an open prison where human dignity is violated. Moreover، the study examines the rhetoric of metonymy in expressing economic collapse and collective psychological devastation، which erased the identity and features of places as a result of sieges and futile wars.

The scientific value of the research lies in proving that metonymy in the contemporary novel was not a stylistic luxury. Rather، it was a subtle and eloquent path through which the creator succeeded in breaking the barrier of silence and liberating consciousness، thereby exposing the hidden depths of society and its political and social taboos without falling into the trap of direct declaration.
