Assessment of the Environmental Impacts Resulting from the Cement Industry in Iraq: A Comprehensive Analytical Study of Multi-Media Pollution and Mitigation Strategies

Abstract

The cement manufacturing sector in Iraq serves as a fundamental pillar supporting reconstruction and urban development; however, it is classified as one of the most environmentally burdensome heavy industries. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive assessment and in-depth analysis of the multi-media environmental impacts (air, water, soil, and public health) resulting from cement manufacturing in Iraq. The research adopts a quantitative descriptive-analytical approach by reviewing scientific literature and analyzing available environmental monitoring data for both public and private Iraqi cement plants.

The results revealed that older plants (operating with wet-process kiln technology) exceeded internationally permissible limits for particulate matter emissions ($PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$) and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) by rates ranging from 200% to 360%, while recording severe negative impacts on soil alkalinity and groundwater. This degradation is primarily attributed to obsolete technology, total reliance on fossil fuels, and the failure of filtration systems due to frequent power outages. The research concludes that the sustainability of this sector requires a radical shift, including mandatory transition toward dry-process closed-cycle kilns, activating the use of Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF), and tightening environmental penalties to enforce the "polluter pays" principle.
