Grammatical Implications of Some Arabic Prepositions in Ibn Al-Dahan’s (d. 1170 A.D.) Grammar

Abstract

This paper investigates the grammatical references and implications contained in selected Arabic prepositions as detailed in Ibn Al-Dahan’s treatise on grammar. Ibn Al-Dahan, an Arab medieval grammarian, wrote a treatise on Arabic grammar where a detailed account of prepositions was given. In his treatise on prepositions, Ibn Al-Dahan explained how certain Arabic prepositions carry different meanings.  This treatise, therefore, indicated the effort-taking scholarships and investigations by many medieval Arab grammarians while attempting to uncover hidden meanings, set syntactic rules, and remove irregular or unacceptable forms. Rules were set to remove problematic or ungrammatical possibilities which have been the core of centuries-long traditions of linguistic and grammatical investigation
