Imam Hassan's (peace be upon him) relinquishment of his right to the caliphate to Mu'awiya

Abstract

This research offers a comprehensive study of one of the most significant pivotal events in Islamic history: Imam Hassan ibn Ali's (peace be upon him) abdication of his right to the Caliphate in favor of Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, and the political, religious, and social consequences that resulted. The research aims to analyze the background to this decision by examining the historical circumstances that followed the martyrdom of Imam Ali (peace be upon him), examining the nature of the conflict between the Kufa camp and the Levant camp, as well as the internal and external factors that prompted Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) to take this decisive stance.

The research focuses on the content of the peace agreement between Imam Hassan (peace be upon him) and Muawiyah, in terms of its texts, guarantees, and intellectual dimensions, while analyzing its implications for the concept of political legitimacy in Islamic history and the subsequent development of Imami thought. It also sheds light on the diverse sectarian interpretations of this event among different Islamic schools, demonstrating how the abdication was a strategic step aimed at preventing bloodshed and preserving the unity of the Islamic nation during a highly sensitive period in its history. The research concludes that Imam Hassan's (peace be upon him) decision was not a sign of weakness or a concession of principle. Rather, it was a conscious reformist vision that balanced religious and political interests and established a new philosophy for crisis management through dialogue and tolerance rather than armed conflict. Through an analysis of the historical and political outcomes, the research demonstrates that this concession represented a founding moment for a profound transformation in the structure of Islamic governance, from a legitimate caliphate to a hereditary monarchy. This left a lasting impact on the development of Islamic political thought throughout the ages.
