Abstract

This study is an attempt to provide a new analysis of the nominal sentence in Surah Al-Baqarah, based on Noam Chomsky's Theory of Generative Transformational Grammar. The research is based on the premise that the Holy Quran possesses a deep linguistic system that goes beyond superficial grammatical rules. The problem with this study is that traditional analyses of the nominal sentence, despite their importance, describe the phenomenon without revealing its underlying cognitive mechanisms. Therefore, this study aims to identify the deep structures of nominal sentences in Surah Al-Baqarah and trace the transformations that led to their appearance in their surface form. This contributes to uncovering new dimensions of rhetorical inimitability. The research findings show that understanding the nominal sentence requires integrating grammatical, rhetorical, and generative analyses. The nominal sentence is subject to deep generative rules, and grammatical transformations directly influence its rhetorical connotations. For example, the choice between a nominal or verbal sentence for the predicate conveys different meanings: the former implies permanence and constancy, while the latter indicates renewal and continuity. The study also revealed that phenomena such as fronting and postposing are not just random arrangements; they are the result of deliberate transformations aimed at emphasizing or focusing on a specific meaning. The analysis further confirmed the existence of parallel or antithetical structures in some verses, which enhances the meaning of contrast or symmetry. This study affirms that the nominal sentence in the Holy Quran is a complex linguistic unit, and a complete understanding of it requires moving beyond surface analysis to delve into its deep structure and generative mechanisms. This approach is not limited to understanding rules but opens up new horizons for comprehending the precision and depth of Quranic expression, thereby enriching both linguistic and religious studies.
