Geographical Dimensions of Unplanned Urban Expansion in Iraqi Cities: Challenges and Sustainable Solutions

Abstract

This research aims to examine the geographical dimensions of unplanned urban expansion in Iraqi cities by analyzing the spatial, environmental, social, economic, and political factors that have contributed to this growing phenomenon. The study discusses the main causes of informal urban growth, including rapid population increase, internal migration, weak urban planning and local administration, as well as the political and economic crises that have affected urban development in Iraq. It also highlights the negative environmental impacts such as land degradation, pollution, and the decline in essential urban services.

The research adopts a descriptive-analytical methodology supported by Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze urban growth patterns and spatial trends. The findings indicate that most Iraqi cities are experiencing unplanned expansion due to poor urban governance and weak regulatory frameworks. The study concludes with several recommendations that emphasize the importance of integrating GIS in urban planning, rehabilitating informal settlements, and promoting sustainable urban development policies with community participation.
