This study examines the account of the Ismailis as presented by ibn al-Nadīm (d. 385 AH / 995 CE) in his encyclopaedic work Kitāb al-Fihrist, at a time when the Ismaili movement constituted a significant intellectual force. The study offers a critical reading of Ibn al-Nadīm's methodology in describing the Ismailis, and analyses the terminology he employed in referring to them. The research concludes that al-Fihrist represents the earliest systematic survey of the Ismailis and their literary corpus. While the work is marked by a degree of ambiguity and imprecision in distinguishing between the various Ismaili sub-sects, it nonetheless presents material of considerable scholarly value, predominantly descriptive in character, with limited influence from the intellectual and political climate of the author's era
